PCB Design Software: Manufacturing Outputs

The best export workflow is the one that produces a complete, repeatable manufacturing package from your approved design. KiCad, Altium Designer and Autodesk Fusion organize those tasks differently. This page focuses on the outputs and verification steps, with links to official documentation instead of assuming every installed version has identical menus.

Choose the task before choosing an export command

Separate fabrication outputs, assembly outputs and supporting documentation. Fabrication needs the board geometry and construction requirements. Assembly adds exact component identity, population variants, locations and mechanical instructions. A rendered board image can help review, but it is not a substitute for production data.

Record the application and installed version used for a release. If an export script, plugin or template participates, identify its version or controlled copy too. This makes a later release reproducible and helps diagnose changes after a software update. Do not select new software solely from the appearance of a preview; evaluate library control, collaboration and downstream data needs.

KiCad: coordinate schematic and board information

KiCad provides board manufacturing outputs and component position data; its documentation directs BOM work toward configurable schematic export. See the official PCB Editor documentation and select documentation matching your installed version. The linked development manual can change, so verify options against the actual release you use.

The practical release task is to keep schematic fields, footprint references and board outputs aligned. Review fitted and excluded components, exact purchasing fields and the placement origin. Use the generated files to check the result rather than assuming the native project’s appearance proves the exported package is complete. Preserve the settings used for a successful release.

Altium Designer: control output definitions and variants

Altium’s Output Jobs documentation describes grouping manufacturing and documentation outputs. A controlled output definition can help keep a release consistent, but it still needs review against the selected project and variant. Verify the source used for the BOM and the population represented in assembly data.

When a project contains several variants, confirm the same intended configuration across the BOM, drawings and related outputs. Name the released variant in the manifest. After changing an output definition or upgrading the application, inspect a fresh generated package before treating it as equivalent to the previous workflow. Follow documentation appropriate to the installed product version.

Autodesk Fusion and legacy EAGLE data: review the CAM job

Autodesk documents generating manufacturing files through the Fusion electronics CAM workflow in Prepare manufacturing data. Review the selected template, layer mapping and generated file set for the actual board. A template suitable for one layer arrangement is not evidence that another design’s outputs are complete.

For legacy EAGLE projects, record the originating version and review imported libraries, rules and output settings in the application being used now. This is a migration check, not a claim that every legacy command remains available. Confirm current product support and interface details in Autodesk documentation; avoid following an old screenshot without checking the installed environment.

Verify manufacturing data outside the authoring view

After export, inspect copper, drill and outline together in a suitable viewer. Check that all intended layers exist, the board dimensions are correct and holes align with lands. Compare the manufacturing view with the fabrication drawing. Use an accepted connectivity export where the project requires it, and investigate discrepancies before release.

Assembly verification also needs the BOM and coordinates, which a copper viewer may not fully validate. Reconcile reference designators, board side, rotations and population variants. For asymmetric connectors, check physical mating direction against the package and assembly drawing. A successful file-generation message says that an export completed, not that every engineering requirement was satisfied.

Maintain a release recipe without freezing mistakes

Keep a short recipe naming the outputs, templates, version and required visual or data checks. Update it when a justified change occurs, and retain the recipe used for earlier releases. Automation can reduce repeated work, but its output must still be reviewed when inputs, libraries or software behavior change.

Use engineering resources, file preparation and DFM review to turn the exported files into a controlled submission. Request engineering review with the actual outputs and any format questions. Acceptance of native files or advanced exchange formats must be confirmed for the project rather than inferred from this software overview.

Frequently asked questions

Which software is required for a four-layer PCB?

There is no single required application. Choose a workflow that can express your design and generate the formats accepted for the project, then verify the manufacturing outputs.

Why does this guide avoid fixed menu sequences?

Interfaces and export options can change by version. Task-based guidance with official documentation reduces the risk of applying an old command sequence to a different installed release.

Can I reuse an export template from another project?

Only after checking layer arrangement, output functions, origin and project requirements. A reusable template is a starting configuration, not automatic proof of a correct release.

Will importing an EAGLE project preserve every manufacturing detail?

Verify the result instead of assuming complete equivalence. Review libraries, rules, layers and generated outputs in the application and version used for the new release.

Does a DRC pass mean the export is ready to manufacture?

No. Design-rule checks address configured rules inside the design environment. File completeness, export interpretation, assembly consistency and project-specific manufacturing constraints still need review.
